Bamboo charcoal was made as early as 1486 AD during the Ming Dynasty in China. For hundreds of years people in East and South Asia have been using bamboo charcoal for a number of purposes. Now in the West we are beginning to understand more about the many benefits of using bamboo charcoal.
One of the main uses of bamboo charcoal in the modern home is as a natural air-freshener that is free of dangerous VOCs. Bamboo charcoal is incredibly absorbent and is great at sucking unpleasant odors from the air. It is also possible to buy bamboo charcoal in convenient bags that you can put in the trash can or fridge to remove unwanted smells.
Another use of bamboo charcoal is to regulate humidity in a room. If the relative humidity is low bamboo charcoal will add moisture to the air; and if the relative humidity is too high bamboo charcoal will remove unwanted water vapor from the air.
Science has also recently discovered that bamboo charcoal emits negative ions. One special use of bamboo charcoal is to counteract all the positive ions given off by electrical equipment in a home. Too many positive ions can cause people to feel stress and anxiety.
Another discovery made by scientists looking at bamboo charcoal is that it gives off far infrared rays. These rays are sometimes called the ‘rays of life’ because they speed up the metabolism and promote cell growth.
The list goes on. Bamboo charcoal is also useful to make water filters. The bamboo charcoal filters out impurities and unwanted chlorines from tap water. Also bamboo charcoal and the bamboo vinegar that can be extracted from bamboo charcoal have long been used to make medicine in Asia. This is because bamboo charcoal can absorb poisonous and other toxic substances.
Finally as with bamboo, bamboo charcoal is antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal. Bamboo charcoal in clothes, soft furnishings and other household products can make a home a healthier place and a safer environment for people who suffer from allergies and asthma.
When you consider all of the above, it really is difficult to over-estimate just how special bamboo charcoal really is.
